If you’re in a leadership role—whether you’re running a company, leading a team, or building a vision—the most important question you can answer is this: What do I want?
That’s it.
That’s the first and most important job of any leader: to know what you want.
The second job?
Communicate what you want in a way that inspires others to want it too.
Simple, right?
But here’s the truth: I’ve worked with a lot of leaders—smart, capable, even visionary people—who haven’t taken the time to truly define what they want. They’re unclear. They’re unsure. Or they do know, but they’re too afraid to say it out loud. So, they don’t.
When leaders don’t know what they want—or don’t own it—it shows up in sneaky and destructive ways.
It shows up as procrastination.
As passivity.
As endless meetings with no real movement.
As waiting for “the right time” or “more data” before making a decision.
When you don’t know what you want, you’re far more likely to let other people decide for you. You live on their terms. You chase their version of success. You pursue their agenda—whether it’s your boss, your board, your peers, or the market.
Slowly but surely, your own voice gets quieter. Your vision blurs. Your conviction weakens.
You don’t lead.
You follow.
Here’s the cost:
When you don’t know what you want, you don’t act.
When you don’t act, you don’t move.
When you don’t move, you don’t grow.
Instead of building a life or career that’s meaningful, you end up with one full of regret (“I wish I would’ve…”) or envy (“I wish I had what they have.”)
Leadership isn’t about wishing.
It’s about clarity.
It’s about courage.
It’s about action.
So let me ask you again, leader: What do you want?
Be bold enough to name it.
Be clear enough to describe it.
Be brave enough to say it out loud.
And then—do the second part of your job.
Communicate what you want with such passion and clarity that others can’t help but want to follow you.
Because when a leader knows where they’re going—and invites others along the way—momentum happens. Alignment happens. Culture shifts. Progress accelerates.
You stop living on accident…
…and start leading on purpose.
Want help getting clear on what you want and how to communicate it so people line up to join you?
That’s exactly what I do.
I help executives, emerging leaders, and purpose-driven teams cut through the noise, clarify what matters most, and lead with conviction. If you or your organization is ready to level up your leadership—reach out. I’d love to work with you.
To stop reacting—and start leading, let’s talk.
